PART 1: UNDERSTANDING FEMINISM, MISOGONY, MISANDRY, AND PATRIARCHY: WHAT THEY REALLY MEAN

Conversations about gender are everywhere today. They shape our relationships, our culture, our homes, and even the way we argue online. But the sad truth is that many people still discuss these issues without understanding the basic words involved. Before we dive into the Nigerian gender wars, we need to start from the foundation. What do these words actually mean? What are we really arguing about?

FEMINISM: THE SIMPLE IDEA OF FAIRNESS

What is feminism?

Feminism is the belief that women deserve to live freely, safely and equally.

It is the idea that a woman should not be held back simply because she is a woman. It means she should have the same chances to learn, work, dream, earn and live her life the way she chooses.

At its heart, feminism is about equality. Not superiority, not revenge, not hatred of men. Just fairness between all genders.

Feminism questions the old systems that allow one gender to enjoy opportunities while the other has to fight twice as hard. It is simply saying that a woman should have the same right to dream, to work, to lead, to be safe, and to be respected the same way a man does.

Nothing complicated. Just fairness.

MISOGYNY: THE HARM WOMEN STILL FACE

What is misogyny?

Misogyny is the dislike or hatred of women.

It shows up in the way some people talk about women, treat women or see women as less important. Sometimes it’s loud and obvious, like violence or insults. Other times, it’s silent and hidden in attitudes like, “women don’t deserve this” or “women should stay in certain places.”

Misogyny is that mindset that makes people feel comfortable treating women unfairly, doubting their abilities or reducing their worth simply because they are women.

It is when a woman’s worth is questioned simply because she is a woman. When her voice is dismissed, her ambition is shamed, or her safety is threatened. Misogyny has existed for centuries, and sadly, it still shows up in many everyday situations.

MISANDRY: THE REACTION NOBODY REALLY TALKS ABOUT

What is Misandry?

Misandry is the negative attitude or dislike toward men simply because they are men.

It is the belief that every man is bad, dangerous or unworthy of trust, without even knowing them personally.

Misandry shows up in comments like “all men are the same,” “men don’t care,” or “men are the problem.”

It also appears when people dismiss men’s emotions, assuming men don’t feel deeply or don’t deserve understanding.

It is the attitude that disregards men’s feelings, struggles and humanity, treating them as one giant group instead of individuals with their own stories, flaws and good sides.

Sometimes misandry comes from pain or past experiences, but it still ends up painting all men with the same harsh brush.

At its core, misandry erases the truth that men also feel, love, hurt and deserve to be seen as human.

PATRIARCHY: THE SYSTEM WE INHERITED

Patriarchy is a system where men are placed above women, and society is built in a way that gives men more power, more voice and more freedom.

It’s not just about one man or one woman;it’s the structure, the culture, the rules and the expectations that have shaped how families, communities and even countries are run.

In a patriarchal system:

  • Men are expected to lead
  • Women are expected to follow
  • Men’s feelings, mistakes or dreams are taken more seriously
  • Women are judged more, restricted more and expected to sacrifice more

Sometimes patriarchy is loud; like telling a woman she cannot do something because she is a woman.

Other times it’s subtle: like celebrating a man’s ambition but calling a woman “too much” for having the same fire.

Patriarchy also hurts men.

It tells them they must always be strong, never cry, never show fear, never be vulnerable. It traps men in a box that says their worth is measured only by money, dominance or toughness.

At its core, patriarchy is a world built on imbalance, where one gender is lifted higher, and the other is expected to adjust, endure or shrink.

It is the system feminism tries to correct.

Understanding the system is the first step to understanding the tension.

HOW THESE CONCEPTS CONNECT IN REAL LIFE

Patriarchy sets the foundation for inequality.

Misogyny is the attitude that supports it.

Feminism rises to challenge that inequality.

Misandry arises when hurt turns into bitterness and generalisation.

Once you understand these terms, you can understand the real heart of Nigeria’s gender battles.
